Sunday Trip to [Karlstrup Kalkgrav] and its surroundings
I am just sentimentally sharing pictures from my last sunny Sunday bicycle trip to Karsltrup Kalkgrav that took place 14 days ago.
Karlstrup Kalkgrav is an old flooded limestone quarry located southeast of Copenhagen, in Solrød kommune. The place with crystal clear water and rich wildlife, known only to locals, is one of the real gems of Danish nature.
The place is family and picnic friendly. There is one main path that winds around the lake and makes it possible to reach the edge of the lake and jump subsequently into the water (if the Danish weather is hot enough to bath :).
If the weather is just normal, cold and greyish, sit on your bike again and make a round trip through the Karlstrup forest ( Karlstrup skov). The landscape is nicely flat. There are several farms with lazy cows and grazing horses in the area. You can go up to Karlstrup beach (which is probably the most windy beach I have every been to) and check out the magic forest Trylleskoven with its gnarled trees.
And now you probably ask: how to go there?
We took S-tog A to Sølrød Stranden and then we biked approx. 10 minutes to the limestone quarry. For more info you can also check the web page of Solrød kommune or The Danish Ministry of the Environment (Danish only).
Play of light in the Frederiksberg Have
Frederigsberg Have is a huge garden in the middle of Copenhagen. It is a great place for early spring walks or summer picnics. And it is definitely one of the most hilly area in the city.
Watching a Storm Coming
Anytime, I am going to the beach in Charlottenlund, it is raining. Last Wednesday was no exception. Instead of sea bathing, my boyfriend and I were sitting under a small white shelter, eating our sandwichs and watching a spectacular show.
When the show was over, we took our bikes and rode home.

Indoor Gardening
Isn't it just lovely to see your plants growing?
The beginning of March: I enjoyed the first rays of spring sun and planted some herbs, radishes, and pumpkin seeds.
April: All plants except pumpkins are growing. Hurray! But I'm little bit worried about their future. I tried to grown some herbs last year, but the were weak and died after two or three months. Any idea how to care for plants now?
The Beauty of Vestamager
Vestamager aka Kalvebod Fælled is a huge green area on the west part of the Amager island. It lies 0-2 meters below sea level. It used to serve as an artillery training zone. It was dammed and drained during the War World 2.
Nowadays, it is a family friendly place. It can be reached very easily by metro (Vestamager station). There is a small natural centre with a cosy restaurant few meters from the metro station. It is a great starting point for your walking/biking tours. The natural centre offers a wide range of education programs for children. You can also hire a bike there (I will definitely do this next time) or buy some wood to make your very own fire and to roast sausages or fruits.
The area is flat and a bit windy. And you can see many sheep, horses, and birds while exploring it. :)
And if you are interested in architecture, you shouldn't miss the 8tallet. It's an amazing complex of flats!
Anyway, I like the area very much. I hope, I will have time to go there soon again (with a bike and a picnic curve ;-). Have you already been to Vestamager? Or what is your favourite place for picnics in Copenhagen area?
