Monday Concerts

Not showing up to my Danish classes can be also beneficial. I was invited to a couple of concerts on Monday evening, and when I went there, I had the great time.

First, the saxophonist Mia Dyberg asked me to take some pictures of her instrumental duo playing in the Jazz House. I had already had a photo session with her and Christian Balvig and it was fun. You can find pictures here. So I was really looking forward to seeing their performance.

And also Jula Aimée – the Dutch singer and exchange student, who has been living in Copenhagen for four months – invited me to her last concert before she returns to Amsterdam.

I arrived a bit later to Mia's concert. So I missed the chance to speak to her about her expectation. Honestly said, the light conditions in the Jazz House were really challenging. I like the place very much. The club was reopened last summer after the big reconstruction, and it has a touch of the 1930's. A long bar, dark green curtains, heavy glass chandeliers, and candle lights create the cosy romantic atmosphere. On the other hand, the place is too dark to take pictures in... Anyway I'm happy that I managed to take few pictures there.

Unfortunately, I couldn't stay in the Jazz House to listen to the second concert, because I had to move my ass to get to the other concert I had been invited to.

Jula was performing in the Huset in the evening reserved for vocalist from the Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium. Six different acts introduced themselves in short twenty-minute slots that evening. Jula was the forth and performed together with a Danish guitar player. She sang tree songs. I really liked the last one called The Rest. It was a beautiful, but sad song. Jula composed it during her stay in Copenhagen and wrote the lyrics too.

During the concert, I accidentally ran into Guro Tveitnes, a Norwegian vocalist. I didn't know she was also going to perform that evening. She was singing and playing the horn with her trio.

Guro is a member of my favourite free improvising vocal band, IKI. IKI is a group of eight women from four Scandinavian countries. They have been singing together for more than tree years, and they are really cool! :) They believe in intuitive music making, and their concerts are totally improvised.

IKI recorded plenty of new music last summer, and they are working on their new album now. They started a crowdfunding campaign in order collect money to promote the album to the world. I've already donated, and you should too! Their music is pure and beautiful! If you don't want to donate, check out IKI's webpage. You can find some inspiring music there. ;-)

Have a nice snowy evening!

I feel happy to eat these carrot muffins. My friend Clarissa shared a Danish recipe with me. It's simple and delicious. And I'm proud that I was able to understand it without using a dictionary. Yep, my Danish has improved! ;-)

DIY [Mini Magnets with Your Own Photos]

MiniMagnets

I love taking pictures and I also love to share them. When I traveled to the Czech republic last time to visit my family and friends, I wanted to take them some small presents from Denmark. I decided to have fridge magnets made with my Scandinavian photos. But it turned out to be a really challenging task to find a company that could print magnets with different designs, and that were small. Most companies offer big magnets, which are quite expensive. And I was not so happy with the quality of the print either. So I decided to make magnets on my own.

I found the inspiration for the project on How about Orange. And I was surprised at how easy it is to make magnets without sending your photos to a printing office.

All you will need is:

MiniMagnets

  • a photo with your images. (I printed several 10x15 cm photos with three sets of eight pictures. Each picture was 2.5x2.5 cm big. I prepared it on Photoshop but you can use any photo editing programme :)
  • a piece of cardboard or bookboard (the thicker the better. Anyway I used the back of my A4 notebook, which I had at home. And it worked! :)
  • a hobby glue
  • a brush to apply the glue
  • sharp scissors
  • and self-adhesive magnets of course (As I don't have very good experience with the magnetic tape, I would recommend you buy some thicker magnets. The tape is not strong enough to hold papers on a fridge or on a magnetic board.)

How to do it:

MiniMagnets

1. Stick the photo with your images on the cardboard. Make sure it sticks properly.

2. Let it dry for a while.

3. Apply some glue on the photo. Spread it equally with the brush until the whole photo is completely covered and make sure there are no small bubbles on it. (It depends on the glue, but yes, it will be completely white).

4. Let it dry again. This might takes several hours! When the glue is dry, the photo will be clear again.

MiniMagnets

5. Cut out your small pictures and stick the magnets on the reverse sides.

Have fun!

P.P.S. I would be happy to see your creations! Send me a photo. :)

PhotoTalks: Maylen Rusti [Singer and Songwriter]

Maylen Rusti Oct 2012

I had a photo session with the Norwegian singer and songwriter Maylen Rusti, who currently lives in Copenhagen. We met in one of my favourite parks in Østerbro to take pictures there. I was a bit worried about the weather. 'Cause, you know, you can't trust Danish weather. It changes twenty times a day.

Eventually all went well. It wasn't raining. We relaxed and enjoyed an unusually sunny afternoon and a beautiful autumn scene. I was curious about Maylen's professional life, so I asked her a few questions during our photo shoot.

Maylen Rusti Oct 2012

Maylen, what are you currently working on? Any interesting projects?
I'm currently working on getting the last details in place for the release of my first album. The release is set to be in January '13, but the release dates are yet to be announced. Other than that I'm spending some time in my home studio working on new material for some upcoming recordings, as well as booking gigs for the next semester. Right now, I'm also waiting for my second music video to be ready for launching, which it will be in just a couple of days.

What does your normal day look like?
A normal day for me could start with waking up early to work three hours in the library, then going home to eat lunch, drink coffee and then I get ready to work with my music. In some cases, working with my music means sitting in front of my computer for hours, writing e-mails and applications for funding for different projects. The best days are, of course, when I've made some new music that I really like. Nowadays it motivates me a lot when I get quick (and positive) answers to my e-mails, or when I get good feedback on my new material.

Maylen Rusti Oct 2012

What inspires you to compose music and write lyrics?
The thing that inspires me the most for writing music is when I hear music that I like and find interesting, or when I'm able to take the time to really enjoy my everyday life. It's the times when I stop to think about how I'm feeling, and why, that there comes some interesting ideas for new songs. In this case I get really motivated and inspired, whether the feelings are good or bad, 'cause it all makes sense in music (smiling).

When and where is your next concert?
I'm playing one concert on 9th of November in Bergen in Norway. And then I have two concerts in January. The first one is on 5th at Mono in Oslo, and other is on 31st at Studenterhuset i København. You can find details about my upcoming shows on my new web page. :)

Thank you for the interview, Maylen!
You're welcome!

Malmö Impression

Few pictures from my trip to Malmö.

Malmö

Actually it wasn't the best day for trips at all. It was raining like hell. I arrived to Malmö late, so almost all shops and cafés were closed. I walked little bit around the city. Malmö is nice but I didn't really enjoy it ...
