PhotoTalks: Irene Vidal [Illustrator and Creative Advertiser]

Photo shooting and interviewing a Spanish diva, Irene Vidal, who happened to live in Copenhagen.

What brought you to Denmark?
I had always wanted to have an international experience. I visited Copenhagen two years ago, and it really shocked me. I felt that the city was completely different from others, and I loved many of its values, like its relaxed atmosphere and green areas, ubiquitous Nordic design, the fact that bikes are prioritize over cars, and the way how Danish enjoy their free time... Last summer I had the feeling that I have to go back to discover more about this culture. And then an opportunity came and I moved here.

When did you start drawing?
Like most of us, I started drawing when I was child and went to school. I used to design characters with quirky clothes and create short graphic stories that began with a simple dot. Some of these drawings are awful, haha.... :), but I still keep them.

However, I had stopped drawing for several years because I was very busy working and felt that I had no time for this minor thing. Eventually, I returned to it. It is my “happiness therapy”. Illustration relaxes me, makes me happy and makes me listening to myself... and these are not minor things. So now, I try to save some daily time to draw. Simply said drawing means to me the same as for example practising yoga or watching football means to other people.

What are you currently working on? Any interesting project?
I have different projects in mind. I moved from Barcelona to Copenhagen few months ago, so I am experiencing all sort of situations. New places, new people, new weather, new culture and so on. I feel like I am turning this into visual stuff, such as illustrations, collages, and digital designs. These days, I am playing with different type of materials, pencils, watercolours... My after summer goal is to leave my comfort area, get my hands dirty and see how far I can go with new techniques.

Where does your creative inspiration come from?
Inspiration can come to you, but many times you must go out to look for it. I have noticed that inspiration is coming to me when I make changes in my life. With changes I mean both things like finding a new working space in a new good café where you can enjoy endless breakfasts, discovering a park, or experiencing more transcendental feelings like newness, unexpectedness, the sense of danger... These experience make me sit at the table and draw for hours. I also find children really inspiring, especially, their innocence and creativity and the way how they express themselves and how they move.

Please, have a look [lenk0031.keaweb.dk] and feel free to test it on smart-phones, tablets etc. And let me please know if you find anything that is not working. I look forward hearing from you.

Being a Student [Again!]

I can't believe that it has been more than 2 months, since I posted my last post here. Time goes by so fast! It goes by even faster, if you are busy and you are having fun (like me).

Asking why am I so busy? I am going to school! It's quiet new. I started at the end of January. I chose a study programme called Multimedia Design and Communication. It is at Copenhagen School of Design and Technology (KEA). And it is awesome!

At the beginning, I felt old to start studying again. I am twenty-something-something and have already got my bachelor degree in International Area Studies. Lot of my friends are getting married, having small children, buying apartments and cars, building houses etc. And me? Learning how to code a website and master Adobe Programs. :) Luckily, there is a very creative environment in the school and teachers seem to be supportive as well, so I forgot my age and immerse myself in multimedia design.

street art
[Street-art-assignment. Would you believe that all the stickers at the wall aren't real?]

Every day at school is a challenge. We have classes from 9 until 14. The classes is in English and it is practically-oriented. We have some lectures of course, but there are also both, individual and team work. And we are suppose to read a lot. I regularly come home totally exhausted with a headache, yet happy that I learn something new.

The programme takes 2 years. Every semester is divided into three modules and there are different subjects in each module. We started with a short introduction to Photoshop and Illustrator programmes and had to deliver few graphic assignments, like the typographical poster or the street art. Now, we are focused on web analysis, responsive web design and HTML5 and CSS. And, surprisingly, we have to build our own personal responsive web page. My web page is in progres. Slowly but surly, I am finishing the project. By the way, I experienced a great lecture about responsive web design a week ago. The British web designer Simon Foster talked about his approach to building fluid websites and his experience working as freelancer. It was very inspiring. And his work is worthy checking. I like the way how he thinks about a web page. His web designs don't look so... digital. They look more like books or magazines.

Ok. Enough talk, let's get back to code. Oh, I have actually one question. Is there anyone who can recommend me nice (English) poems or song lyrics? Please, don't say William Blake. We have already had a school project using one of his poems.

Cake'n'Surprise

Perník

Few days ago, I FINALLY finished my 'Czech cake recipe project'.

The idea of the project first came to me last summer during my Danish course. Our class had one of those few fantastic relaxing lessons. Drinking coffee and eating home-made cakes and muffins, we shared our funny stories about Danes and life in Denmark.

I brought my favourite Czech chocolate cake that I baked. One of my classmades asked me for its recipe after the lessons and I promised her to send it via e-mal. Than I forgot (you know, we didn't go to the same class any more, new tasks appeared etc.). And then I suddenly remembered and felt very ashamed.

So I decided to send the recipe in a special way.

Perník

I draw it, prepared a few package with a secret magical ingredient that is essential for the whole recipe, packed it nicely and sent it. And because I love surprise as much as I love baking, I sent two more letters with the recipe. One went to France and the second one flew to Asia to cheer my friends living there.

Flirting with Photoshop

She copy

Yes, I'm flirting with Photoshop. It's an amazing medium. This is my first surrealistic collage, I have ever done. It's based on my self-portrait that I took four years ago in Prague.
