[Invitation] Stories from the Streets of Berlin - Kovacs & Dyberg's Album Release Concert

Kamilla Kovacs and Mia Dyberg

Do you already had any planes for the big Friday Culture Night (Kulturnatten) in Copenhagen? No?! Come to a CD release concert in JazzHouse!

Kamilla Kovacs and Mia Dyberg

Danish/Hungarian vocalist Kamilla Kovacs and Danish/Swedish saxophonist Mia Dyberg are releasing their brand new album called "Stories". The album is dedicated to the Capital of Germany, where both artists lived.

"After living in Berlin, we felt a need to express the moods, stories, and the special energy the city gives us. We have composed songs dedicated to different places and streets in Berlin that meant something special to us or inspired us. Among others there is a song to the Ghanaian pushers in Görlitzer Park (Kreuzberg) one to the lost love in Neukölln and improvisations dedicated to the ghostlike mood on Nalepastraße (Rummelsburg)", said Mia.

Where & When: JazzHouse, Friday 10th October 2014 at 23:00

Invitation to the [Nordisk Lyd og Poesifestival]

Don't have any planes for Wednesday evening? Let's challenge your Danish!

I've got a lovely e-mail with an invitation from my friend Mia, a Swedish-Danish musician living in Berlin now. Although she explores intensively artists' life there, she is back in Denmark for a while and is going to perform together with the drummer Morten Skøtt and the storyteller Amalie Laulund Trudsø at the Nordisk Lyd og Poesifestival at the Jazzhouse in Cph.

The festival takes place on Wednesday 20th Nov at 20:00 in the Jazzhouse. There will be around nine musicians, writers, and poets. You can expect both sounds and different music styles such a jazz, folk, and electro-music blended with various poems and stories. And I can guarantee that some of the performances will be absolutely improvised.

When I went out to practise the Danish language last time, it was really 'spændende'*). One of my friends and I joined and enjoyed the 25th Copenhagen Pecha Kucha Nigt at Huset. And I was proud of myself that I could understand the most of the presentations. The only one I didn't get was a presentation of some photographer. She was so cute and brave while she was talking about her work, however her language was too sophisticated for my Danish basics. Well... We'll see, how it goes on Wednesday with poems...
*) exciting

You can find more information about the 'Nordic sound and poetry' festival HERE. But be careful it's in Danish. :)

Update: The festival is on Wed 20th and on Thu 21st. So that means almost twenty artists and two times more music and words.

Monday Concerts

Not showing up to my Danish classes can be also beneficial. I was invited to a couple of concerts on Monday evening, and when I went there, I had the great time.

First, the saxophonist Mia Dyberg asked me to take some pictures of her instrumental duo playing in the Jazz House. I had already had a photo session with her and Christian Balvig and it was fun. You can find pictures here. So I was really looking forward to seeing their performance.

And also Jula Aimée – the Dutch singer and exchange student, who has been living in Copenhagen for four months – invited me to her last concert before she returns to Amsterdam.

I arrived a bit later to Mia's concert. So I missed the chance to speak to her about her expectation. Honestly said, the light conditions in the Jazz House were really challenging. I like the place very much. The club was reopened last summer after the big reconstruction, and it has a touch of the 1930's. A long bar, dark green curtains, heavy glass chandeliers, and candle lights create the cosy romantic atmosphere. On the other hand, the place is too dark to take pictures in... Anyway I'm happy that I managed to take few pictures there.

Unfortunately, I couldn't stay in the Jazz House to listen to the second concert, because I had to move my ass to get to the other concert I had been invited to.

Jula was performing in the Huset in the evening reserved for vocalist from the Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium. Six different acts introduced themselves in short twenty-minute slots that evening. Jula was the forth and performed together with a Danish guitar player. She sang tree songs. I really liked the last one called The Rest. It was a beautiful, but sad song. Jula composed it during her stay in Copenhagen and wrote the lyrics too.

During the concert, I accidentally ran into Guro Tveitnes, a Norwegian vocalist. I didn't know she was also going to perform that evening. She was singing and playing the horn with her trio.

Guro is a member of my favourite free improvising vocal band, IKI. IKI is a group of eight women from four Scandinavian countries. They have been singing together for more than tree years, and they are really cool! :) They believe in intuitive music making, and their concerts are totally improvised.

IKI recorded plenty of new music last summer, and they are working on their new album now. They started a crowdfunding campaign in order collect money to promote the album to the world. I've already donated, and you should too! Their music is pure and beautiful! If you don't want to donate, check out IKI's webpage. You can find some inspiring music there. ;-)

Have a nice snowy evening!

The jazz band Lubos Soukup Quartet played a CD release concert on Saturday 15th September. The concert was held in a cosy café/bookstore Tranquebar in Copenhagen. Musicians played mostly tunes from their new album Beyond the Borders, which was released at a Czech label New Port Line. There was a very friendly atmosphere during the concert and the audience could enjoy incredibly creative and vivid performance.
